Title: The time has come - 3D modeller/artist needed!
Post by: Vaelor on August 23, 2012, 07:00:19 am
Okay devoted fans and wannabe developers, the time has come - WE NEED YOU!

We are currently looking for a 3D design artist to help kick off the new release of Street Rod 3. We need somebody who meets the following criteria:-

Please post on this thread and tell us a little about yourself and why you'd like to work on SR3 as a 3D graphic artist. Please be aware that at this time this is a NON-PAYING position. Until such time as the SR3 project receives some funding from donations, Kickstarter, or some other method, all members of the development team are working for the love of the Street Rod series in their spare time.

Now post! =)

If you need someone handy with Sketchup, I can make some generic placeholder-type models. I haven't tried using Blender in awhile but it was entirely useless the last time I tried (would not launch), though considering my experience with Autodesk Inventor, I doubt I'd be terrible with it.

What 3D editor is needed? Sketchup?

What 3D editor is needed? Sketchup?

I don't think we want to restrict anyone to use a specific 3D editor. You can use the one you prefer until it is able to export 3D models to a reasonable and common file format.

reasonable and common file format.
That's very specific. What's the current engine compatible with?

The most common standard for any 3d project is .3ds. I have to disagree and say that isn't too specific at all as there are other really common formats like .3ds, it's just been so long I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Directly from the IRRLicht site:

Code: [Select]
Currently supported mesh file formats:

Animated objects:
 •B3D files (.b3d, r, skeleton)
 •Microsoft DirectX (.x, r) (binary & text, skeleton)
 •Milkshape (.ms3d, r, skeleton)
 •Quake 3 models (.md3, r, morph)
 •Quake 2 models (.md2, r, morph)

Static objects:
 •Irrlicht scenes (.irr, r/w)
 •Irrlicht static meshes (.irrmesh, r/w)
 •3D Studio meshes (.3ds, r)
 •Alias Wavefront Maya (.obj, r/w)
 •Lightwave Objects (.lwo, r)
 •COLLADA 1.4 (.xml, .dae, r/w)
 •OGRE meshes (.mesh, r)
 •My3DTools 3 (.my3D, r)
 •Pulsar LMTools (.lmts, r)
 •Quake 3 levels (.bsp, r)
 •DeleD (.dmf, r)
 •FSRad oct (.oct, r)
 •Cartography shop 4 (.csm, r)
 •STL 3D files (.stl, r/w)
 •PLY 3D files (.ply, r/w)

By now there are a bunch of free tools that can export in 3ds or x or even convert them.
I have done some working in 3d long ago, mostly to draw *spaceships* so not very handy to draw cars.

I'll see if I can find a Q3 model editor later on.

Well....I didn't notice this post at first.  I presume that the project is looking for a professional 3D modeller for the built-in content.  I've done a few add-ons for Redline in the past.  I was going to insert the images, but it looks like webshots deleted them....and this board doesn't support the uploading of files.  But...you'll know my screen name from the Ambrosia boards.  What I presume is that after SR3 (or whatever its name ends up being, if the copyright strangeness mentioned elsewhere becomes an issue) is released, we'll all be developing as many mods for it as possible.

I know this is an old thread but i played SR & SR2(less so) for a long time, and had a lot of fun.

Im rather (and excuse me while i blow my own trumpet here) a decent multifaceted game developer and artist.

I know most of  C/C++, almost all of C#, and some basic python. (and other irrelevant for this game stuff (linux administration, bash, basic perl, php etc).

Im not massively experienced in game development, though, but im willing and want to learn.

I've modelled in maya, milkshape (earlier) and have been modelling for about 3 years now in blender, my texturing and material knowledge isn't quite as good as my knowledge of modelling (vertex, and bezier based).

I do have a day job but i can work on stuff on most week nights and some weekends.

I'll find a model i've done and post up a pic or two.

hello and welcome to the forums!

this is good news, since we only have two coders around (giszo and myself), and neither of us have put ANY effort into the game for almost a year now. i was experimenting with the unity3D engine, which is C# mostly, and giszo vas trying to do stuff in irrlicht. if you look around the forums, you can find some discussion about these engines, or you can find me on IRC if you want to know more.
giszo is more of a C, C++ guy, i was tinkering with unity becasue it has some support for a simplified javascript-like "language", since i don't know any C.
i would be happy to talk about the future of development, since we are pretty much stuck here, and a new impulse may get things moving again.

see you around!

Welcome, mighty Fenix! Are you a Starcraft fan? I used to have a cat called Fenix. =)

It would be fantastic if you could get a hold of Unity and familiarize yourself with the language. It'd be great to have two coders working in the same direction, that's something the SR3 project hasn't seen in a long time.

Please drop into the chat room as soon as you are able to, and meet and greet the team. If you're an experienced PHP programmer I may even have some paid work for you to do if you're interested.

Thanks again for stopping by, hope to hear from you again soon!

I am planning to contribute with both 3d modelling and coding within the time I have... given that i have a job a wife 2 cats and a kid that also requires time :)

VERY AWESOME!!! We have chosen a new game engine that is supposed to do some of the work for us but, is still really really really flexible.

cdoublejj: Did you reply to every important thread yesterday? I almost fell back in my chair seeing every single section of the board active!

It very much is. At the end of the day all we have is a forum and idea. We just need a way to make that idea come alive. If I could program or 3D model i would.

Right now what we need is an understanding of what SR3 is hence the article i keep saying i'm gonna write. When we had the old forums you could go back and spend hour reading through development and suggestion forums to get a good idea to get idea of what SR3 should be since we don't have that i'm all that's left... at least until TSJ came around. Hell mark comes around in IRC once in a long while. So that's why I want to try and write article to give a better idea of what is.

All be damned if i haven't putting it off fora while, all i have is brain storm/rough draft.
