"Interstate Street Rods 3"?
« on: March 05, 2013, 12:15:54 am »
The following topic assumes you know about Interstate '76 and the upcoming fan version, Interstate Outlaws.

Let's say for a moment that Interstate Outlaws was combined with Street Rod 3. What would the outcome be, besides ridiculously '70s? Perhaps you'd be able to damage (and repair/upgrade/sell/etc.) certain vital car parts, like in Street Rod, but with weapons and ammo alongside normal car parts? Or perhaps you would install your "cup holders" (makes it less likely to be headshot'd with a pistol) and "heated seats" (more ammo) yourself? Maybe more off-roading-oriented parts would be available.

What do you think?

Sounds like something reminiscent of Streets Of SimCity.

I never successfully played it, and although it seemed like a good idea, I've seen videos of it; it's actually terrible due to a combination of crappy controls and moronic-at-best AI.

Well, if you can, try to track down a copy (or even a demo) of Interstate '76. I know there's an Interstate '82 demo floating around somewhere, but it's just not the same. Maybe it'll convey my ideas a little better.

EDIT: On second thought, maybe it would take place partially in the city and partially in the countryside/desert/etc, along the highways like the Interstate games, and in some cities (once you've cleared them of corrupt police and creepers) you could do some racing for money?

gog.com has it drm and modified to run on windows 7, i think i have it on my wishlist. that game was the precursor to Vigilante 8 on N64, Which i DID have. Good times.

I'd say that sounds right on the money.

Although it is indeed a precursor to Vigilante 8, the original game is extremely sim-like. Supposedly it's a lot like a MechWarrior game (though I've never played those) in that you can add and remove armor and chassis reinforcements, slap on a combination of weapons, and modify the car's characteristics via modding, with the idea that (in singleplayer) you gun down baddies for their upgrades, or (in multiplayer) you try to out-fight or out-race your opponents. And the way the game plays, nothing is worthless, but the way you play influences what's useful to you at any given moment. Prime example: Structo Bumper doubles(?) your chassis reinforcements on the front and back of the car, but take up a slot you could be using for something else if you never run into anything or anyone. Also, higher-performance parts (yes, all of them) are much less durable than their stock and lower-performance counterparts, so that you could be running around with an up-armored F1 car but would get slowed down quickly if you took a few hits, specifically in the engine, suspension, and tire areas.

Streets Of Sim City has the parts and weapons updatability like you mention in I76, minus the high performance parts and reliability degradation. Which in mind is kind of dumb because that's just a misconception as in IRL some performance parts are stronger than stock but, cost more money.

If Sr3 was converted in battle game, there would be a myriad of mods and upgrades of all kinds weather it be cheap performance parts that don't last or REALLY expensive performance parts that out last stock parts. I imagine that would hold true with weapons and defenses as well.

Nice ideas, but aside from outright cost, you'd have to balance multiplayer somehow. Perhaps a cost limit, like in IS82?

"Interstate '82", I76's lesser-liked successor (it's not sim-like at all, it's just a Twisted Metal clone with customizable cars, worse audio, and slightly better graphics). And yeah, several grades of ammo would be nice.

Oh yeah it's on GOG too. Must be pretty forgettable. Too bad they don't make an official vigilante 8 port from the N64 version. I hear mixed reviews about the vigilante 8 xbox 360 successor, mostly glitches and poor physics.

1. https://www.facebook.com/groups/253505331404314/
If you join the group (or even just have a FB account) you can download their version of I'82. Be sure to patch it with their patch when you do; that sets up internet play correctly and includes a few fixes and paintjobs.
2. Vig8? I think I played it once on a hotel N64 once (remember those?), and it was alright. I've heard great  things about it, so I've been looking around for a copy.
3. Yeah, I heard crap about the 360 successor; I noticed that many vehicles have been changed for some reason, and that the graphics are what I'd call "technically upgraded". Compare an Interstate '76 screenshot to an Interstate '82 screenshot, for example. I82 obviously improved on the graphics, but there's no common aesthetic to it like there was in I76.
