I have some questions:
- Do you licensed the original games or it will be an unofficial version of the game?
- Do you release it for free as GNU but not Open source right?
- The game would be only downloadable trough this site?

hello!
right now, we are only in the planning phase of restarting the project, so it's difficult to say what will be done, and how.
as for your questions:
- the game is an unofficial sequel to the street rod series.
attempts were made to find the copyright and license owners, but we were unsuccesful.
so it's most likely, that the game will remain an unofficial version.
- the game started as a GNU project, and went open source in 2004 i think.
since we are yet discussing the technologies to be used, we can't say anything for sure.
open source is likely, but that remains to be seen.
- you will be able to download the game from streetrod3.com, but i'm quite sure it will be mirrored on other sites as well. however, it's advised to use the "official" download sources, which will be listed on streetrod3.com at a later time. these locations will always contain the latest version of the game.

I think that SR 1 and 2 are so old now that any copyright issues are outdated.
This means that we should be able to use the music and graphics like stickers from the old SR 1 and SR 2 games.
I made SR 3 versions of all SR 1 stickers some years ago.
Recently I stumbled upon a guy who claimed he had redone all the SR 1 stickers in a higher resolution, so I will try to find out more about this.

This game can do well, because there is much else like it. The release almost looks like it could have been done in OPENGL, but lacks the anti-aliased fonts and textures. I understand SR3 isn't near being finished.

Be careful, the copyright hasn't expired. You still need to get permission from the current copyright owner.
Even if you cannot find the owner you cannot copy or use anything, not even create something that resembles the original Street Rod series. (Calling it 'unofficial' won't make it legal either)
I'm sorry, that's how copyright works.
You can however try to go on without asking permission and hope it won't get noticed.
And if it gets noticed, hope the original owner won't make a fuss.

No, I'm kidding. I've looked at your site and I'm very pleased to see that what you're doing is nothing like what we're attempting, so you're absolutely no threat to us. In fact, your publicity is our publicity and vice versa - we should maybe think about a link exchange or something similar.
Thanks for the heads up about the copyright. Which method did you use to justify your SRO project? Contact the copyright owner, fly under the radar, or forge ahead and found that the IP owner didn't make a fuss?? After all, your project resembles the original Street Rod's much more than ours would - if I'm not mistaken you're making an exact copy of the game for the web?
By the way, I read your history on the companies behind Street Rod 1 & 2. Who is the current copyright holder then? P.Z. Karen?

Thanks for the warm welcome. I wanted to stay low profile but I couldn't resist the urge to reply.
It's good to see you acknowledge we're aiming for the same goal. Not being competitors but we're all enthusiasts who want to create/see a sequel to Street Rod (whether in 3d or not).
You're absolutely right. As far as copyright concerns, I've hit the jackpot because I'm re-using everything.
It's indeed a version for the web.
I'm doing it for fun right now so I would probably get away with it although they could still sue me if they want to.
When I get to the point where I think it's getting too serious (as in, I can release a finished product) I really need to get the legality sorted.
Therefore I'm on the hunt to get/buy the original rights (you won't like this part). I've made a lot of progress but no results as of yet.
What I can tell is the original copyright isn't registered. It still belongs to the original owner but he needs to register it first (which can take up to 6 months in case it's part of a lawsuit) before he really can sue anyone for infringement.
So that's a hurdle for the original owner and that's what I meant with: hopefully the original owner won't make a fuss.

Something to worry about even more: How can we use real car brand names in Street Rod?
That'll be nearly impossible without paying huge sums of money and follow strict guidelines set out by the manufacturers.

I'm not sure that is the case as there are other open source racing games using real names. Also Hellmark in the past had mentioned we wouldn't be using damage (not sure if we will stick to that rule).

Well this thread is quite interesting. Unfortunately as devoted SR fan I view someone else hunting down and buying the rights a threat to a true and proper sequel and possibly competition but, no matter who finds the copy right the owner several problems stand in the way money being the the major issue and big publishers being the second as there is good chance that is who owns the I.P.
EDIT: there is more to this post and it is possible it could be taken the wrong way but, I think it conveys my thought well.

ever played any crusin games?? about the only 3d thing in that game is the cars but it still races... ok... haha, so it might work as a good base for a simple street rod remake because lets face it the 2d racing didnt work well

Well actually, all of the tracks and cars are fully 3D. The people and most of the effects, not so much.

idk but, apparently he has dissembled the old games to some point AND spoken with an old developer from the SR2.

Heard about the second bit, but I wonder how he managed to "disassemble" (reverse-engineer?) the games.

Hahahaha lol you and me both! It's sure is neat as hell. With SR3 so slow going it's neat to go back to the original games for entertainment. I remember one time we started randomly editing our save games with hex editors.
One guy managed to figure out how to give your cars black paint jobs and few people managed to adjust how worn out there cars/parts were. I some how managed to make un wearable parts worn out, like my carburetors became 25%worn out.

Interesting game mechanic, to say the least. What if the new version allowed for such things, and included a way to change the way the game worked (i.e. press tilde to open a console or open a menu to mess with what can happen, what can't happen, etc. etc.).

I do not know but, i do know being a remake it will have more stuff like black paint and possibly more parts but, this is just my speculation.
