texture size?

does standardization of texture size matter? a lot of the older textures are 256x256? is that good or bad? is there a good or bad? does it even matter with modern texture filtering?

256x256 could be enough, all depends on the situation. usually, for large surfaces, 1024x1024 is needed, at least that's what i'm aiming for.
